ART IS FICTION

Artists, no matter what they think, don't supply answers, only questions.

I’ve lived in the suburbs most of my life, but I was raised in the country and haven’t really found a compelling reason to become citified.  I spent some time in the military in England, and then went to college, but still the values of rural life have informed most of my art, both in the theatre and photography.

Where I came from, a close neighbor was at least a quarter of a mile away.  There was space between people.  When people aren't on top of each other constantly, they put some distance between their way of looking at things, and the way others do.

While I'm not sure I believe in the old adage "familiarity breeds contempt", I do believe that a little distance gives you a better chance of understanding and appreciating other people.

I view my art from that same perspective....step back and respond.  I don't look for meaning.  After all, what does a mountain or a sister "mean"?  Meaning comes later if at all.

I work in the theatre as a director, and I'm a photographer.  Both of these fields combine interpretation and creation.  The best of all worlds.
